Jason Garcia-Kakuk: Tenor Biography

Jason Garcia-Kakuk, a tenor from Queenstown, MD, is currently based in Rochester, NY. His recent opera performances include portraying Lysander in A Midsummer Night's Dream (Britten) and covering the role of Tamino in Magic Flute (Mozart) with Aspen Opera Theater. This season, Jason's engagements include work as a Gerdine Young Artist with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, playing Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus (J. Strauss) with Eastman Opera Theatre, and  as Der Steuermann in The Flying Dutchman (Wagner) at ArtPark. Notably, Jason was named a winner in the North Carolina district of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition and has also competed at the Southeast Region level. He secured first place in the Friends of Eastman Opera Competition, which was adjudicated by Glimmerglass Festival’s Robert Ainsley. 

In the 2025 season, Jason Garcia-Kakuk was seen as a Studio Artist with Finger Lakes Opera, where he performed Matteo Borsa and covered the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto (Verdi), as well as portrayed Colin in The Anonymous Lover (Joseph Bologne). Additional opera performances in 2025 include Janáček’s chamber opera, The Diary of One Who Disappeared at The Eastman School of Music, and participating in the world-premiere of the theatrical song-cycle, We Go On, Oswego! Earlier that year, he appeared in Eastman Opera Theatre’s production of Trial By Jury (G&S) as The Defendant, performed as Ruiz Alonso in Ainadamar (Golijov), and participated in Allen Shawn’s H&G, a contemporary retelling of a classic Grimm’s fairytale. Jason was also recognized as a finalist in the 2025 Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition. 

Looking back to 2024, Jason’s performances include Triquet and Lensky (Cover) in Eugene Onegin (Tchaikovsky), along with Mr. Angel in Mozart’s The Impresario, taking place with Opera Baltimore. 

In the Spring of 2023, Jason was invited to showcase his skills in the role of Odoardo in Ariodante (Händel) with Curtis Opera Theatre. A 2022 graduate of Temple University with a B.M. in Voice Performance, Jason's previous roles at the institution included Pellèas in Impressions de Pellèas (Debussy) and Don Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro (Mozart). Additionally, he participated in the chorus for Oedipus Rex (Stravinsky) with Opera Philadelphia in 2022, portrayed the Lamplighter in The Little Prince (Rachel Portman) with the Teen Opera Initiative of Annapolis in 2019, and performed as Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte (Mozart) during the 2017 Bethesda Summer Music Festival. Besides his passion for singing, Jason Garcia-Kakuk enjoys reading, writing poetry, playing guitar, and photography.
